GLOBAL EXPEDITIONS CLUB – Italy: Amalfi Coast & Capri Group Trip - 7 Days

This is a Global Expeditions Travel Club Trip:

The group will travel April 27 - May 3, 2014

Explore the beauty and dramatic splendor of the Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri on this exciting 7 day Global Expeditions Travel Club group tour to Italy.

The Amalfi Coast: considered by many, including us, to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. Basing ourselves in the quaint seaside town of Sorrento, we'll travel roads that hug the dramatic cliffs of Amalfi and visit the incredible seaside towns of Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. We'll board a ferry and visit the posh and stunning Isle of Capri and its famous Blue Grotto cave! And we'll also take a guided tour of the infamous ruins of Pompeii, a city buried by the AD 79 eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. And with some coveted leisure time built in, you can join your fellow travel mates and relax on the beach, visit Naples or easily hop on a local bus or ferry and further explore this amazing area of the world. Don't forget the world famous shopping of Italy!

Day 1: Arrive in Sorrento. Evening group orientation.
Day 2: Guided tour of the Amalfi Coast. (B)
Day 3: Full day at leisure to explore. (B)

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1
Arrive in Sorrento.


Arrive in Sorrento Italy. The trip officially begins with the afternoon group orientation meeting held at the hotel (details provided in a Pre-Departure Dossier sent about 3 weeks before departure). Here you will get a chance to meet your GEC Trip Leader, as well as all of your fellow travel companions for what is sure to be the beginnings of many great friendships! Tonight, start your trip off right by joining the group for an optional dinner in Sorrento.

Day 2
Guided tour of the Amalfi Coast (B)


Starting the day off after breakfast, we head out on a guided tour of the spectacular seaside towns of Positano, Amalfi and the mountain top town of Ravello. We'll travel along the famed coastal road that hugs the steep cliffs and boasts dramatic views. The ride is a thrill and the these amazing towns are among the most beautiful you will find anywhere in the world!

In the evening we’ll head out into town again with our fellow club members.

Day 3
Full day at leisure to explore Sorrento/Amalfi (B)


Today is a free day to spend as you like. You may want to venture off with the group to relax in one of the numerous cafes that dot the beautiful city of Sorrento, take in some of Italy's famous shopping, relax down on the beach or even take a local bus or ferry and further explore one or many of the Amalfi Coast towns. Later, stop by a local specialty shop and pick up a bottle of local wine, cheese, bread and olives and spend the day in leisure... Italian style! Your Trip Leader will have many ideas for you.

Day 4
Guided tour of Pompeii (B)


Today we change things up just a bit by going back in time with a guided trip to the nearby ancient city of Pompeii. Located at the foot of Mt Vesuvius Volcano, Pompeii was completely and immediately covered by volcanic ash when Mt Vesuvius unexpectedly erupted in AD 79, instantly preserving the city and many of its inhabitants. We will explore the excavated remains of this famous archeological site, visiting the Forum, Thermal Baths, Lupanare and Vetti's House.

Day 5
Guided tour of the Isle of Capri and Blue Grotto (B)


No trip to the Amalfi Coast is truly complete without a visit to the posh and dramatic Isle of Capri! A vacation home to many of the world's rich and famous, spectacular cliff side houses, incredible views, and a quaint town center, Capri is easily a destination of its own.

Following breakfast, we will take a ferry ride from Sorrento to Capri. With a full day in Capri, we will explore the many amazing sites of the island with a local guide. Weather, crowds and sea conditions permitting, we will also take a boat ride to visit the famous Blue Grotto, a wave carved cave that glows a brilliant cobalt blue in the beautiful waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Day 6
Full day at leisure to explore Sorrento/Amalfi (B)


Today is a free day to spend as you like. You may want to venture off with the group to relax in one of the numerous cafes that dot the beautiful city of Sorrento, take in some of Italy's famous shopping, relax down on the beach or even take a local bus or ferry and further explore one or many of the Amalfi Coast towns. Your Trip Leader will have many ideas for you.

Either way, be sure to join your new found friends in the evening for our last night out together as a group!

Day 7
Trip Ends After Breakfast. (B)


Today your Global Expeditions Club group trip officially ends after breakfast.



Important Information

This tour requires a total minimum group size to run. Please DO NOT purchase your airfare or any personal travel requirements until you receive a written confirmation of guaranteed departure.

This is a Global Expeditions Travel Club group trip that is open to anyone.

Prices are based on double occupancy. If you would like your own hotel room (where available), please choose the optional single supplement at check out. If you do not mind being paired up with a roommate of the same gender, then the single supplement does not apply.

IMPORTANT: this trip starts and ends in Sorrento. You should arrive at the hotel on day 1 by 4:00pm in order to participate in the group orientation at the hotel (details will be provided in a Pre-Departure Dossier that will be sent about 3 weeks before departure). Please note that most flights going to Europe from the US are overnight flights, meaning your flight may have to leave the day before day 1 in order to arrive on time

Please note that effective July 01, 2011 a Tourist Tax applies to all visitors staying at a hotel in Italy. Hotel guests are required to pay the tax directly to the hotel. The charges must be paid directly by each guest at check-in and cannot be covered or pre-paid by a tour operator per government rules. Taxes are EUR4 per night and subject to change.

  • April/May in Italy is as good as it gets. Temperatures average about 72 degrees (22C) during the day and 57 (14C) at night. Shorts can be worn during the day (except in any churches), but be sure to bring along a light coat, sweater and pants for nighttime and those cooler days.
