GLOBAL EXPEDITIONS CLUB: Nepal: Mt. Everest Base Camp Trek - 17 days

This is a Global Expeditions Travel Club Trip:

The group will travel April 15 - May 1, 2014

Follow in the footsteps of the great explorers of Mt. Everest and visit the most famous of exploration base camps on this classic 17 Day locally guided Global Expeditions Travel Club group trek to Mt Everest Base Camp!

Walk amongst the giants of the Himalaya, trek along the amazing and dramatically beautiful Khumbu Icefalls Valley, and view the majesty of Mt. Everest up close.

Leaving Kathmandu with our Sherpa guide, we'll fly through the southern foothills of the Himalaya and arrive in the tiny mountain-side town of Lukla where we'll pick up our Sherpa porters. From Lukla, we begin our trek up the steep valleys, stopping along the way at the numerous Sherpa villages that are nestled along the sides of the near vertical valley walls. Nights will be spent in the same quintessential guest houses that host many a great explorer of both the past and the present.

After an acclimation day in the famous town of Namche Bazaar, we will continue trekking up through the Khumbu Valley which has been carved out over millions of years from snow that falls on Mt. Everest and the surrounding mountains.

After witnessing the dramatic and breathtaking views from the hilltop of Kala Patthar and visiting the famous Mt. Everest Base Camp, follow the picturesque Khumbu valley back down to Lukla for the flight back to Kathmandu, concluding one of the greatest treks on earth.

When you return to Kathmandu, why not indulge yourself with one of Kathmandu's famous and inexpensive post-trek-massages... a 'must do' treat regularly experienced by many of the travelers who trek among these amazing mountains.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1:
Arrive Kathmandu (4,200 feet)

Arrive at the Kathmandu. If you purchased airport transfers through us, you will be met by one of our representatives at the airport and transferred in a private vehicle to the hotel located in the heart of the exotic and energetic neighborhood of Thamel.

In late afternoon, there will be a group orientation with the local Sherpa Guide to review the itinerary and to answer any last minute questions. You will also have the chance to meet your fellow Global Expeditions Club group members who will be traveling with you for the duration of the trip/trek.

The remainder of the day is yours to hang out with your fellow travel mates and to relax and enjoy the gardens of the hotel or take a walk through the vibrant streets of Thamel. Don't forget, if you are looking for inexpensive trekking gear, you will definitely find what you are looking for among the hundreds of trekking shops spread throughout the Thamel neighborhood.

IMPORTANT: Please ensure that your flight arrives before 2:00pm on Day 1 so that you can be at the afternoon group orientation and trip review with your Guide. If your flight of choice is scheduled to come in later than 2:00pm, then you should plan to arrive a day early (an extra night hotel is available for purchase during check out).

Day 2:
Kathmandu (4,200 feet)

Today you will take a guided tour of Kathmandu in a private modern vehicle. Your English speaking guide will introduce you to the magic of this amazing city and its peaceful Buddhist and Hindu cultures. The tour will include many interesting attractions including the old Royal Palaces in Durbar Square, the Hindu temple of Pashupatinath and Buddhist temple of Swayambhunath.

The afternoon is a great time to pick up any last minute personal equipment you may need. Kathmandu is a great place to buy supplies for your trek, such as extremely inexpensive, yet quality warm weather clothing, sleeping bags, snacks, etc. Get a good night of sleep tonight, as tomorrow starts your trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp!

Day 3:
Fly Kathmandu to Lukla (9,318 feet) - Trek to Phakding (8,662 feet - 4 hours) (L, D)

Early in the morning your Sherpa Guide will meet the group at the hotel and you’ll head out together to the Kathmandu airport for a quick, yet exciting flight through the southern foothills of the Himalaya to the small mountain airport in Lukla. After gathering your gear and meeting your local Sherpas who will carry all but your day pack, you will begin your trek up the well-maintained trail (the sole connection between the mountain villages) towards your first overnight stop in the village of Phakding.

Day 4:
Phakding to Namche Bazaar (11,286 feet - 6 hours) (B, L, D)

Getting another early start you will trek along a glacier fed river, through rhododendron, magnolia and giant fir forests, eventually reaching the bustling town of Namche Bazaar, the largest and most important Sherpa town in the region. Namche Bazaar also boasts a vibrant market.

Day 5:
Acclimation and Rest Day in Namche Bazaar (11,286 feet) (B, L, D)

Today is the first of two acclimation days on your trek. These are very important days that are used to help your body acclimatize to the increased altitude and thinning air of the Himalaya. To acclimate properly, you will hike to the top of the hill above Namche with your Sherpa Guide and then return that afternoon to sleep at the lower altitude.

Day 6:
Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (12,662 feet - 5 hours) (B, L, D)

With the first of your two acclimation days completed, you continue up the main trail towards Mt. Everest Base Camp. Following along the fabled Khumbu Valley you will drop into the valley, cross the river and eventually arrive at the village of Tengboche in the afternoon. In Tengboche the views of the surrounding mountains are nothing short of spectacular. It is here that you finally realize that you are truly in the heart of the Himalaya. While in Tengboche you will have the unique opportunity to visit the Thyangboche Monastery, the spiritual center of the Khumbu region. If you’re lucky, you may catch the Buddhist Monks in the midst of their amazing prayer ceremony.

Day 7:
Tengboche to Dingboche (14,270 feet - 6 hours) (B, L, D)

From Tengboche your treks continues to follow the main trail. From this point on, your trek will be above the tree line, affording you unsurpassed views. In the afternoon, you will arrive at the village of Dingboche, your next stop on the trek.

Day 8:
Dingboche to Lobuche (16,156 feet - 6 hours) (B, L, D)

Today is considered your first real day at altitude. The trekking is considerably more difficult and your guide keeps the pace purposefully slow to avoid exhaustion in the thinning altitude. But with the altitude, the views also open up tremendously with dominating and uninterrupted views of the dozens of snowcapped peaks that surround you, including Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and a host of other amazing snowcapped mountains. After the days trekking, you will arrive in the Sherpa village of Lobuche located in the shadows of the mightiest of the Himalayan mountains.

Day 9:
Acclimation Day in Lobuche (B, L, D)

Today is the second of your rest days. After the long trek to Lobuche, this is a welcome day. For enthusiasts, you have the opportunity to take a light acclimation hike up the valley for excellent views and photo opportunities.

Day 10:
Lobuche to Kala Patthar (18,190 feet) and Gorakshep (16,959 feet - 6 hours) (B, L, D)

Bright and early you will begin your trek to summit the nearby hilltop peak of Kala Patthar. Possibly the most spectacular view you can ever witness without technical climbing skills, the panoramic views of Mt Everest and her neighboring peaks, including Lhotse and Nuptse, are nothing short of absolutely breathtaking from Kala Patthar. It will be worth every hard-earned breath and step you take on this amazing trek of a lifetime.

You will then descend down Kala Patthar to the village of Gorakshep where you will spend the night.

Day 11:
Gorakshep to Mt Everest Base Camp (17,090 feet) and return to Gorakshep (7 hours) (B, L, D)

After witnessing the spectacular vista from Kala Patthar the previous day, you will trek up to Mt Everest Base Camp, where a great variety of both history and myths have been born. Along with its legendary history, the views at Everest Base Camp are fantastic, as the camp is strategically situated along the edge of the famous Khumbu Icefalls Glacier, a river of snow and ice that drops down from the peaks of Mt Everest and Lhotse.

Used as the base of operations for those summiting Mt Everest and their crews, Mt Everest Base Camp is a hive of activity during climbing seasons. Who knows, perhaps you will spot a famous climber or Sherpa during your visit? After visiting the historic Mt Everest Base Camp you will descend back down to Gorakshep.

NOTE: if weather prevents a summit of Kala Patthar on Day 10, you will have the opportunity to summit early on Day 11 before heading up to Mt Everest Base Camp.

Day 12:
Gorakshep to Pheriche (14,040 feet - 6 hours) (B, L, D)

Leaving the mighty Mt Everest behind, you will continue back down the Khumbu Glacier Valley to the village of Pheriche where you will spend the night. Be sure to take a walk outside at night to view the stars from the clear high altitude. You will be happy you did.

Day 13:
Pheriche to Tengboche (12,662 feet - 4 hours) (B, L, D)

Continuing down the valley to lower altitudes, the air is easier to breath, your steps come a little more quickly, and trees start surrounding the trails once again.

Day 14:
Tengboche to Namche Bazaar (11,286 feet - 5 hours) (B, L, D)

Returning once again to the lively and bustling village of Namche Bazaar, the trail is mostly downhill but the village is a welcome site.

Day 15:
Namche Bazaar to Lukla (9,317 feet - 7 hours) (B, L, D)

Leaving Namche, the final day of your trek finds you back in Lukla where you will spend the night before catching a morning flight back to Kathmandu.

Day 16:
Fly Lukla to Kathmandu

An early morning flight brings you back to the vibrant city of Kathmandu. The afternoon and evening are yours to spend at your leisure to recover from the long, yet momentous trek and reminiscing with your new friends about your amazing trek. Why not indulge yourself with one of Kathmandu's famous and inexpensive post-trek-massages, get some last minute shopping done, buy some gifts for those at home, and sample the many great restaurants that dot the Thamel neighborhood. Regardless of what you do, it's a sure thing that you definitely won't want to leave this wonderful city!

it is highly recommended that you add an additional night in Kathmandu to both rest after your trek, as well as to account for possible delays due to weather (planes fly into/out of Lukla in clear visibility only... when the clouds come in, flights are typically cancelled for the day, thus you may not get down to Kathmandu in time for your flight).

Day 17:
Trip Ends

The trip ends after breakfast. If you bought the airport transfers through us, we transport you back to the airport for your flight home. OR, stay on for one of our other incredible Nepal, Bhutan or Tibet trips.
